Understanding PRP
The science and process behind natural cell renewal.
How PRP Works
A guide to how your body’s own plasma supports skin health and hair density.
What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a natural regenerative treatment that uses your own blood to support skin health, stimulate hair follicles, and encourage renewal.
Your blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma. Within that plasma are tiny structures called platelets. Platelets contain growth factors—proteins that act as signalling messengers in the body to stimulate cellular repair, collagen production, and tissue renewal.
By isolating these platelets and concentrating them in a small volume of plasma, I reintroduce your body’s natural growth factors into targeted areas—whether that is the scalp to support hair density or the skin during facial microneedling to boost radiance and texture.
How PRP Works: Step by Step
I like to keep my appointments straightforward, comfortable, and unhurried. Here is what happens during a PRP appointment in my Kibworth clinic:
1. A Simple Sample
I begin by taking a small sample of blood from your arm, exactly like a routine blood test at the GP.
2. Concentration & Separation
The sample is placed into a specialized centrifuge. This spins the blood at a controlled speed for a few minutes, carefully separating the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the red blood cells.
3. Careful Application
Once isolated, the golden PRP fluid is ready to be used. Depending on the treatment you are having:
For Hair Regrowth: I administer the PRP through precise micro-injections across areas of thinning hair to nourish fine strands and stimulate follicles underneath the scalp.
For PRP Microneedling: The PRP is applied topically onto the skin during microneedling, allowing the growth factors to absorb deeply into the channels created by the needles.
Why Is PRP So Effective?
Because PRP uses your own blood, it is a biological, highly compatible treatment. There are no synthetic additives or foreign substances involved, making it an appealing option for clients looking for natural regenerative results.
When reintroduced into the tissue, the concentrated growth factors:
Support existing fine hair above the scalp and stimulate active follicles beneath it.
Increase localized blood flow to deliver essential nutrients to tissues.
Stimulate cells to produce fresh collagen and elastin in the skin.
What Does It Feel Like?
Drawing blood takes a few moments. During the treatment phase, you may feel mild discomfort or a brief stinging sensation as the PRP is administered.
I work as gently and carefully as possible to ensure you feel comfortable throughout your appointment. While it is not a relaxing facial massage, the short period of discomfort is easily manageable and well worth the long-term benefit to your hair or skin.
When Will I See Results?
Because PRP relies on your body’s natural cell renewal process, improvements develop gradually:
For Hair Density: Early regrowth and increased density typically begin to show between 4 to 6 months of consistent treatment and home care.
For Skin Radiance: Skin texture and hydration improve over several weeks following treatment as collagen production increases.
