Realistic Expectations

The Process of Shedding

A chemical peel is a controlled injury to the skin to stimulate repair.

The Glow vs The Shed: You will often look glowing immediately after the treatment. However, days 3-5 are typically the "dry days." Your skin may feel tight, like it is a size too small, and you may see some flaking. This is normal.

Pigmentation: If we are treating sun damage, the pigment may actually look darker for a few days before it flakes off. This is the pigment lifting to the surface.

Acne Purging: If treating congestion, you may experience a "purge" (a breakout) in the week following treatment. This is the congestion being cleared from the deep layers.

Immediate Side Effects

Redness: Your skin will look pink or red immediately after treatment, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually fades within a few hours.

Frosting: In some areas (especially over spots), the skin may turn white (frost). This is the proteins reacting with the acid. These areas will likely peel more visibly.

Tightness: Your skin will feel dry and tight. It is vital to keep it hydrated with the correct moisturiser.

Adverse Reactions

Sun Sensitivity: This is the biggest risk. A chemical peel strips the skin's natural protection. You are at high risk of sunburn and hyperpigmentation if you expose your skin to UV light without SPF50.

Hyperpigmentation: In rare cases (especially with darker skin tones), the heat/trauma can cause the skin to produce more pigment. It is vital to prepare the skin correctly before stronger peels.

Burns/Blisters: Extremely rare with superficial peels, but possible if aftercare (like avoiding Retinol) is ignored.

The Aftercare Rulebook

You have removed the protective layer of your skin. You must treat it like baby skin for 7 days.

  1. SPF 50 IS NON-NEGOTIABLE. You must wear it daily, even indoors.

  2. Do NOT pick or pull at any loose skin. This will cause scarring.

  3. Do NOT use Retinol, Acids, or Scrubs for 7 days.

  4. Do NOT use saunas, steam rooms, or hot showers for 48 hours.

  5. Do NOT expose your face to direct sunlight.
