At Aesthetics at 51, transparency is a core pillar of my practice. I believe that every client should have full access to the clinical details of their treatment before booking. This document outlines the specific protocol, risks and recovery timeline for Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy when applied to the scalp.
The Procedure Protocol
The appointment follows a strict clinical order to ensure sterility and safety:
Blood Draw: I will draw approximately 10ml–20ml of blood from your arm, similar to a standard GP blood test.
Centrifugation: The blood is placed in a medical-grade centrifuge for approximately 5–10 minutes. This separates the red blood cells from the plasma.
Extraction: The platelet-rich plasma (the "gold" liquid) is extracted into a sterile syringe.
Injection: Using a very fine needle, the plasma is injected into the target areas of the scalp using a grid pattern.
Sensation & Comfort
Pain Level: Mild to Moderate.
Anesthetic: Numbing cream is generally not applied to the scalp as it is difficult to remove completely and can interfere with the sterility of the hair follicles.
Sensation: You will feel a series of sharp scratches and a sensation of pressure or "tightness" as the fluid enters the scalp. Most clients find this manageable without pain relief.
Downtime & Recovery
Unlike facial treatments, PRP for hair has very little visible downtime.
Immediate: The scalp may feel tight, warm or itchy for 1–2 hours post-treatment.
First 24 Hours: You must keep the scalp dry. No hair washing, no styling products and no intense exercise (sweating).
Social Impact: You can return to work immediately, provided you do not need to wear a hat or helmet which could cause friction.
Risks & Side Effects
Because PRP is autologous (using your own blood), the risk of allergic reaction is virtually non-existent. However, the injection process carries standard risks:
Bruising: Rare on the scalp, but possible.
Headache: Some clients experience a mild "tension headache" due to the fluid pressure in the scalp. This typically resolves within 24 hours.
Infection: Extremely rare, provided aftercare instructions are followed.
Contraindications (Who cannot have this treatment)
I cannot perform this treatment if you have:
Active infection or skin disease on the scalp.
Platelet dysfunction syndromes or critical thrombocytopenia.
Systemic cancer or are undergoing chemotherapy.
Severe metabolic or systemic disorders.
Anticoagulation therapy (blood thinners).
Aftercare Instructions
To ensure the best results and prevent infection:
Do not touch the treated area for at least 4 hours.
Do not wash your hair or apply hair products for 24 hours.
Do not use a sauna, steam room or swimming pool for 48 hours.
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours to reduce bruising risk.
Avoid anti-inflammatory medication (Ibuprofen/Aspirin) for 3 days if possible, as these can theoretically suppress the inflammatory healing response we are trying to trigger. Paracetamol is fine.
Vital Singular Next Action
Shall I now generate the Clinical Protocol for PRP Microneedling?
(This will be similar but with added emphasis on the facial downtime).
